Anytime Fitness, Getting fit for recycling
Problem

Anytime Fitness UK needed a way to separate waste at source that would not look out of place in either an office or a gym, and wanted to prove it at head office before considering a franchise rollout.

Outcome

A 1.6m wide branded mobile Recycling Station is on trial at head office, with hugely encouraging feedback and waste collection processes already adjusted to suit the segregated streams.

Client context

Anytime Fitness is the UK's largest fitness franchise, with more than 180 premium, convenient gym facilities across the UK and Ireland, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Each Anytime Fitness franchise prides itself on providing convenient and affordable fitness options in friendly, well-maintained facilities featuring top-quality exercise equipment.

The issue

Wellbeing is at the heart of the company's mission, and allied to this are its environmental commitments. Waste minimisation and recycling is an essential component of its CSR initiatives, with a recognition that the company must also support its 180+ franchises to achieve overall company goals.

Key to this was finding an efficient method of separating out various waste streams at source, and one that would not be out of place in an office or gym setting. As well as typical day-to-day office refuse, on-the-go food and drink and its associated packaging was a significant component of total waste generated at both headquarters and within clubs. Successful segregation of these items could significantly boost recycling rates.

The solution

Through word of mouth, Anytime Fitness UK approached co-cre8 to help devise a solution to better segregate waste at source. As well as being suitable for an office environment, the company wanted to be sure the solution could be rolled out across all its clubs, but it wanted to trial it first at its offices before making it available to franchisees.

After discussing the requirements, co-cre8 produced a number of CAD drawings before the final design was signed off. The 1.6m wide Recycling Station houses separate bins for general waste, beverage cups and lids, paper and card, and bottles and cans. It is equipped with durable castors to make it easy to move, and is finished with the company's branding and logo. The unit is designed to be easy to clean and maintain, and each aperture is clearly marked to eliminate contamination.

Results

The Recycling Station is currently on trial, and feedback from the staff at head office who use the unit daily has been hugely encouraging.

Introducing the unit has also prompted Anytime Fitness UK to adjust its waste collection processes, so that the segregated materials can reach the most appropriate reprocessing facility for recycling.

In their words

“The Recycling Station has proved highly effective in helping our people to segregate their waste at source and means that we can recycle far more than previously.”

“The Station is not only very functionable and serviceable, but it's also a well-designed piece of furniture that looks great in a professional office environment. Once the unit has completed the trial, and if we're all happy with the results, then we'll certainly be looking to roll this out to our clubs across the UK. We're even thinking of using the unit as a piece of street furniture to publicise the opening of new clubs.”
