Company Background
Anytime Fitness is the UK’s largest fitness franchise, with more than 180 premium, convenient gym facilities across the UK and Ireland, which are open 24 hours, seven days a week.
Each and every Anytime Fitness franchise in the UK prides itself on providing convenient and affordable fitness options in friendly, well-maintained facilities which feature top-quality exercise equipment.
Issues
Wellbeing is at the heart of the company’s mission and allied to this is are its environmental commitments. Waste minimisation and recycling is an essential component of the company’s CSR initiatives, with a recognition that it must also support its 180+ franchises to achieve overall company goals.
Key to this was finding an efficient method of separating out various waste streams at source, and one which would not be out of place in an office or gym setting. The company was also mindful that as well as typical day to day office refuse, on-the-go food and drink and its associated packaging, was a significant component of total waste generated at both its headquarters and within its clubs. Successful segregation of these items could significantly boost recycling rates.
Solution
Through word of mouth, Anytime Fitness UK approached co-cre8 to help them devise a solution to better segregate waste at source. As well as being suitable for use in an office environment, Anytime Fitness also wanted to ensure that the solution could be rolled out across all its clubs. However, it wanted to trial the solution first at its offices before making it available to all its franchises.
After discussing the requirements, co-cre8 produced a number of CAD drawings before the final design was signed off. The 1.6m wide Recycling Station houses separate bins to collect general waste, beverage cups and lids, paper and card as well as bottles and cans. To make it easy to transport, it is equipped with durable castors, and is finished with the company’s branding and logo. The unit has been designed to be easy to clean and maintain, and each aperture is clearly marked to eliminate contamination.
Results
Co-cre8’s Recycling Station is currently on trial but the feedback from the staff at HQ, who use the unit daily, has been hugely encouraging.
The introduction of the unit has also prompted Anytime Fitness UK to adjust its waste collection processes, so that the segregated materials can reach the most appropriate reprocessing facility for recycling.
“The Recycling Station has proved highly effective in helping our people to segregate their waste at source and means that we can recycle far more than previously.“
Ben Dixon, Chief Development Officer, Anytime Fitness UK.
“The Station is not only very functionable and serviceable, but it’s also a well-designed piece of furniture that looks great in a professional office environment. Once the unit has completed the trial, and if we’re all happy with the results, then we’ll certainly be looking to roll this out to our clubs across the UK. We’re even thinking of using the unit as a piece of street furniture to publicise the opening of new clubs.”
